初めて熊谷市を訪れたとき、駅の入り口の真正面にあった巨大なラグビーボールが目立ちました。 ラグビーボールを見たときは、アメリカンフットボールのボールだと思っていたのでよく見なければなりませんでしたが、ラグビーボールだと気づきました。 ラグビーは、慶應義塾大学の英国ラグビーインストラクターであるエドワード・B・クラークによって、1899年に初めて日本に紹介されました。 その後、熊谷市で大人気となり、最終的には熊谷で最も人気のあるスポーツになりました。 熊谷市は、2019年のラグビーワールドカップの開催都市の1つでした。熊谷ラグビー場は、埼玉県の主要なラグビースタジアムであり、今年のタイトル保持者である日本のプロラグビーチームパナソニックワイルドナイツの本拠地です。

The first time that I visited Kumagaya city, one thing stood out, the huge rugby ball that was right in front of one of the entrances at the train station. When I saw the rugby ball I had to look closely, because I thought it was an American football ball, but then you realize is a rugby ball. Rugby was introduced to Japan for the first time in 1899 by Edward B. Clarke, an English rugby instructor, at Keio University. Later on it became quite popular at Kumagaya city, ultimately making it the most popular sport there. Kumagaya city was one of the host cities for the Rugby world cup in 2019. The Kumagaya rugby ground is the main rugby stadium in the Saitama prefecture and the home ground for the Japanese professional rugby team Panasonic Wild Knights, which are the title holders this year.
